On December 17, 2014, the news headlines and reports were dominated with the announcement of an historic agreement that had been forged between the U.S. and Cuba.
It was announced that the agreement entered into by President Obama of the U.S., and President Raul Castro of Cuba, was brokered and influenced by Pope Francis. The two leaders credited and thanked the Pope for his work in coordinating and encouraging 18 months of secret talks and meetings between the two countries, culminating in the agreement that brought a sudden end to decades of cold war hostility.
This is not the first time a Pope or the Vatican has been at the center of Presidents or Politics however. Remember John Paul II’s role in forging an alliance between then President of the U.S. Ronald Reagan, and USSR’s last head of state Mikhail Gorbachev, assisting them in dissolving the cold war between the two nations. Is history repeating itself?
